Events to go to with Mom

Just in case you forgot, this Sunday is Mother’s Day. Every year, to be ironic, the Museum of the Moving Image shows “Mildred Pierce,” a film about a mother-daughter struggle. It will be at 4 p.m. on Sunday. However if you are the mother, and your kids are too young to appreciate such angsty drama, we suggest you visit the New York Hall of Science for their “Tornado Alley” film screening. It’s 3-D, it’s about tornados, we are totally sold. There are multiple showings this weekend, tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for kids students and seniors in addition to the cost of museum admission. Kids have to be at least 6 years old.

Another kid-friendly weekend event we like is a Galumpa at Flushing Town Hall. It’s an acrobatic dance performance, check out this video.

The performance is on Saturday at 2:15 p.m. and tickets are $12 for adults and $8 Children.

And if you want to give your kid a present the day before Mother’s Day, there is a bike swap in Jackson Heights, sponsored by Bike New York on Saturday from noon to 4 p.m. You can bring your kid’s old bike to PS 149 at 93rd Street and 34th Avenue and get a new ride in exchange. The event is also being held in conjunction with the school’s family day. There will also be coaches on hand to teach your kid to ride a bike, just in case it was something you never learned yourself.

QueensBuzz says there is a pre-Mother’s Day parade in Sunnyside at 47th Street & Skillman Avenue at 11 a.m. on Saturday— you should absolutely force your kids to participate, no matter how old they are.

Non-Mom Events

If you are not hanging out with your Mom, or if she is super cool, you might want to check out the LIC Arts Open this weekend. There are tons of art openings and performances, and local artists open their studios to the public the complete guide is here:

On Saturday from 3 p.m. to 11 p.m. we will likely be attending “Actually it’s Ridgewood,” an art crawl of the neighborhood sponsored by the Queens Museum of Art. We are not sure what is going to happen there exactly, but there will be free hot dogs and a party by Silent Barn later in the night, where we plan on getting free CDs. You had us at “free.”
If art isn’t your thing, the Queens New Music Festival will be going on this weekend. It was written up in the New York Times, so that might mean something good is going to happen. All performances are at the Secret Theater Studio 104 (The Little Secret) 44-02 23rd St. in Long Island City. Ticket prices vary, as festival passes may be purchased.
