Will Queens’ startup scene blossom after Cornell builds Roosevelt Island science campus?

Is the startup scene in Queens one to watch? With Cornell’s new science and tech campus being built on Roosevelt Island, it’s looking like an influx of entrepreneurs is likely in western Queens. The borough is well poised for startup mania, especially in the wake of DUMBO’s startup boom thanks to companies like Etsy and the city’s recent press as the next Silicon Valley.

Queens has a history of successful startups, from JetBlue to Silvercup Studios, the city’s largest film and TV production facility. The borough sponsors an annual StartUP! Business Plan Competition that awards start-up entrepreneurs with $10,000 to boost business. And most recently, LIC-based web radio company Songza is giving Pandora a run for its money, its user base growing 50% monthly since introducing the music concierge feature to their apps in March according to co-founder Elias Roman.
