The NY Daily News recently profiled Motorboat and the Big Banana, a beloved boardwalk concession stand on Beach 96th St. in the Rockaways, run by Lindsay Robinson (of Brooklyn’s Diner) and Michael Powers (it was also founded by Jean Adamson of Brooklyn’s Vinegar Hill House restaurant fame). There aren’t many beach days left (can you believe Labor Day is almost upon us?), so the time is right to head to where sand, surf, and frozen bananas intersect.

Motorboat and the Big Banana has developed a stellar reputation for making delicious frozen banana treats – variants include the “Elvis,” which is a chocolate covered banana further drizzled with peanuts and bacon – and flavorful deep-fried seafood dishes – including the very popular Fish Po’Boy made with whitefish. The stand has developed a “devout following” overall. It is also credited with helping launch the “Rockaway food renaissance” since opening two years ago.
