Streetsblog reports that a new group of business owners calling themselves “Sukhi NY” will help care for and maintain the 37th Road pedestrian plaza in Jackson Heights. “Sukhi” is an acronym for “Social Uplift Knowledge and Hope Initiatives,” and is also the Hindi, Urdu, and Bengali word for “prosperity and happiness.” Until now, City Councilman Daniel Dromm’s office had been responsible for the plaza’s upkeep.

Last year, the establishment of the plaza had angered nearby businesses after they saw a decrease in traffic and increase in vagrancy, leading to a large drop in sales. It was only after the weather turned warmer and pedestrians began to gather at the plaza that it won over the local businesses. The space has been a big hit with consumers and pedestrians.

Sukhi NY has already started on its commitment to the plaza by hosting an Eid bazaar there to celebrate the recent end of the Muslim month of Ramadan.
