Over at the Bushwick Daily, they’ve written a post called “Friday: Your Arty, Boozie Ridgewood Night” about art and beer worth checking out in Ridgewood, which lies on the border between Queens and Brooklyn. First off are three art studios – Regina RexParallel Art Space and Bull and Ram – all located at 17-17 Troutman Street (GMAP). We’d also like to give a shoutout to Queens’ own Yarn/Wire, an amazing new-music piano-percussion quartet that makes their home in that building on the second floor. We’ve been there, and we agree that the  building is “an industrial giant.”

The neighborhood also changes drastically as you move from Bushwick to Queens  – across the street from 17-17 is a series of modern brick row apartments, whereas the buildings in Bushwick along Troutman are seriously industrial and covered in artful graffiti.

If you make your way there, be sure to check out the roof deck accessible from the second floor, with amazing views of Manhattan and LIC. Here’s a photo we took (yes, it’s filtered, but the sky really was moody that night) from the deck (it was gloriously cool out there that evening, too, in contrast to the humid interior of the building):

That’s Manhattan in the distance.

Our Bushwick friends also highlight Valentine on Seneca Avenue (GMAP), where owner Fred Valentine enjoys the peace there. He used to live in Williamsburg but has found happiness and satisfaction in Queens. Gallery space Small Black Door is on Palmetto Street, run by artists Matthew Mahler and Jonathan Terranova. Artist Julie Torres recently “organized the biggest group show in the history of the space titled Heroes,” there, so stop by and check it out this weekend.

Gottscheer Hall (GMAP) gets some love for its food and drink. It’s a German beer hall not far from Small Black Door, and has been a part of the Ridgewood community for decades, as the area used to have a large German immigrant population, many of whom came to work in the many breweries that were once there.
