Sam Gelman is the Executive Chef for Momofuku Toronto, but he’s also an Astorian at heart. The food from his old Astoria neighborhood has stayed with him as he’s moved to another country, and recently he shared his top five eats from the nabe over on the Momofuku tumblrThis just goes to show you that Astoria food is some of the most memorable (and delicious) around.

His top five are:

The Sandwich Kings – Sal, Kris, and Charlie’s. We love their sandwiches, too, and admire their amazing “The Bomb” filled with pretty much everything in the shop. (33-12 23rd Ave Astoria, NY 11102 – GMAP)

Arharn Thai.  Crispy duck salad FTW! (32-05 36th Ave Astoria, NY 11106 – GMAP)

El Rey Del Taco Truck (30th Ave). The huaraches are out of control awesome. (33-01 30th Ave Astoria, NY 11103 – GMAP)

Linn Sushi. We totally agree that you can’t do better than Linn for sushi in Astoria. (29-13 Broadway Astoria, NY 11106 – GMAP)

International Meat Market. Sam says it best, “A true butcher shop, these guys have skills. Not only can you get a great dry-aged ribeye, but you can watch the butchers use massive cleavers to prep a whole lamb or pig for the grill with exacting precision.  all the way through the bone, but not even a mark to the flesh or skin.” (36-12 30th Ave Astoria, NY 11103 – GMAP)
