A few interesting things are opening up around Queens and we thought we’d tell you more about them.

Math Mural in LIC

LIC Partnership informed us about a math mural coming to LIC, featuring the Fibonacci Sequence. More info:

Publicolor, a non-profit supporting the City’s youth through the beautification of public spaces, will be painting the Fibonacci Sequence on the 49th Avenue bridge (GMAP) this Saturday – Publicolor Day. The mural is an addition to the nearby 21st Street bridge also featuring the number series. Of the design choice, Publicolor Founder and President Ruth Lande Shuman says, “The sequence beautifully expresses the synergistic relationship between time and movement while giving visual interest.”

Mayor Bloomberg declared in a 2006 proclamation that every fall we celebrate Publicolor and its volunteers for “proving that simple acts can make a profound and positive impact on struggling communities.”

Old Blockbuster becomes Strand, not The Strand

Astorians have been wondering what the name of the pub on Broadway in the old Blockbuster space (GMAP) was going to be called. Now we know, thanks to a snap by the folks at BORO – it will be called Strand, most likely named after either the Strand Theater (nice discussion about it on Astorians.com), and/or the Strand lanes that occupied that area decades ago. Rumor has it that the bowling lanes are still below ground there, too.

Both locations of the old bankrupted Blockbusters in Astoria have now been made into new businesses – Strand on Broadway and the California Farmers Market on 31st Street near Ditmars, which happens to have a very good looking fish counter.

New guitar shop in Astoria

We Heart Astoria posted on their Facebook page about a new guitar shop on 35th Ave and 31st Street (GMAP), called Freestyle Custom Guitars. Local realtor Peter Horowitz has more details on the place:

They have about six lesson rooms being built. It’s owned in part by a luthier who custom builds bazukis. It’s definitely a place catering to beginners who want to take lessons.

Everyone has to start somewhere. Here’s to more musicians learning to pluck properly here. Also, they sell new and used instruments, ranging from basic guitars to electric, ukeleles, and imported and custom made Bouzouki. You can get your axe repaired and tuned there, too.

Chipotle in Forest Hills is hiring

We reported on the opening of Chipotle in Forest Hills a little while back, and recently we took a look at the job listings on the Chipotle site. Lo, and behold, they are hiring. If you want to work there know that “building the perfect burrito – and having fun doing it – is the first step to building your career at Chipotle.” Here’s the job listing, in case you’re looking for work or simply curious. The Chipotle is opening up at 70-30 Austin Street (GMAP).

This will be the first Chipotle in all of Queens, so it’s a big deal. We know many in Forest Hills are really excited about this development, and we look forward to noshing on burritos there soon.

Bonus: Don’t forget about M. Wells Dinette!

The M. Wells Dinette opened yesterday, which many in the NYC food world have been anticipating with bated breath. And yes, it looks like ground horsemeat will be on the menu at some point (actually, they served up horse tartare last April). We hope the pudding chomeur is back.

Do you about something cool that is opening up in your neighborhood? Please feel free to contact us with the details!
