M. Wells is back and ready to fill your belly

This morning we learned that the M. Wells Dinette is scheduled to open this Thursday, September 27 inside MOMA PS1. We’ve been waiting for them to open for some time, so it’s all very exciting to know that it will only be a few days more. This “gourmet cafeteria” will serve dishes like “whipped butter and caviar sandwich, a flan made with foie gras, a deconstructed clam chowder, and a marrow and escargot tart.” You also might see “rabbit terrine, brandade with black-olive oil, and old favorites like bibimbap with tuna and scallops.”

The Queens literary scene is up and coming and worth knowing about

Anabelle Short of 30th Ave blog fame wrote a great piece on the Queens literary scene. Here’s an excerpt:

Brooklyn’s massive book festival is underway this weekend, which is just one aspect of its thriving literary scene. Hundreds of writers have made and still make Brooklyn their home. Meanwhile reams have been written about Manhattan and by its inhabitants. There’s plenty of material for the “literary map” of that borough. It begs the question, what about Queens? It barely features on the literary landscape. For now, that is.

[…]

All that said, there are signs that Queens’ literary life is consolidating and growing. There are the writers featured in the anthology mentioned above, Forgotten Borough. Later this year a new literary journal, Newtown Literary, will launch – it will emphasize writing about Queens and by Queens based writers. (It also welcomes writing from elsewhere: as its website states, “Queens is just as much a state of mind as it is a geographic boundary”).

Viva La Comida was awesome

We spent our Friday evening in Jackson Heights at Viva La Comida! Here’s our recap of the event. And yes, the arepas were worth the 30 minute wait. We had a hard time choosing between the arepa de choclo and the arepa con queso. Our solution? We got them both. Tortas and curry fries were also fab. We hope this event happens again next year, too.

Aung San Suu Kyi spoke right here in Queens

Nobel Peace Prize-winner Aung San Suu Kyi was in Queens over weekend, speaking at Queens College Aaron Copland School of Music. As you may know, she was under house arrest for 15 years in Myanmar. In November 2010 she was freed, and is now a member of Myanmar’s parliament, elected to it earlier this year. She encouraged those in audience to vote but did not endorse any candidate. In her words, “You must vote. You must use your democratic rights. Otherwise, they will fade away.”
