We’ve talked about green buildings in LIC before, but Maspeth beats out all others when it comes to energy efficiency, taking place in a warehouse in Maspeth, reports the Queens Ledger. The Davis & Warshow warehouse at 57-22 49th Street (GMAP), one of the oldest suppliers of bath and kitchen plumbing in NYC, “converted its entire warehouse on 49th Street to LED lighting, making it the most energy efficient building in the United States in terms of watts per square foot.” They’ve also installed solar panels on the roof.
Recently, Con Ed paid the company a $63,704 rebate, thanks to their lighting conversion – they have reduced their electricity use for lighting by 62 percent. Davi Finkel, the company’s President, was the driving force behind the conversion, and stated, “We are now net-zero in lighting cost with American-made LED tubes.” This sharp reduction in energy costs is reminiscent of the Little Neck co-op that installed a cogeneration plant, and reduced their energy costs by 85%, and the man in Astoria who installed solar panels on his roof and regularly receives rebate checks from Con Ed because he produces more energy than he needs.
Independence LED, a Pennsylvania-based manufacturer of LEDs, helped Davis & Warshow with the conversion. And as far as Con Ed goes, they encourage striving for energy efficiency with both businesses and individuals and is prepared to issue rebates to anyone who takes steps to reduce their energy use. Finkel believes that anyone can achieve these goals.
