Fun with numbers

First off, today’s date is 10/11/12. Nice.

Not fun with numbers – soon you’ll pay more to take subway

Yes, it’s true – the MTA want to implement fare hikesĀ on the subway. Few subway riders are happy about this. We took a look at what the MTA is going to propose and put the four options in a clear, to-the-point list. Here are the proposed fare increases:

Monthly MetroCard

  • Increase the the monthly MetroCard toĀ $119Ā (up $15) andĀ eliminate the pay-per-rideĀ 7% MetroCard bonus.
  • Increase the monthly MetroCard toĀ $125Ā (up $21)Ā and reduce the pay-per-ride MetroCard bonus from 7% to 5%.

Weekly MetroCard

  • Increase theĀ weekly unlimited-ride MetroCardĀ toĀ $32Ā (up $3) andĀ eliminate the Pay-Per-RideĀ 7% MetroCard bonus.
  • Increase the weekly unlimited-ride MetroCard toĀ $34Ā (up $5) and reduce the Pay-Per-Ride MetroCard bonus from 7% to 5%.

Prices could go up as early as March 2013.

Olde tyme Steinway Street

The Queens County Market shared this photo of Steinway Street at 30th Ave in Astoria from days gone by (November 14, 1944, to be exact), on their Facebook page. You can see the old Astoria Theater in the distance, which is now a mega drugstore.

Dutch Kills is growing up, with cocktails and coffee

The small community of Dutch Kills within Long Island City is changing. First it was oodles of hotels. Now smaller businesses are starting to show up – enter Windmill Tap & Grill, to be located atĀ 38-40 29th Street (GMAP), just a couple blocks from the 39th Ave N/Q stop.Ā The plan is to serve coffee in the mornings and cocktails and local (NY) beer in the evening (perhaps weā€™ll even see someĀ SingleCutĀ there), along with a mix of food, including American comfort food. Sounds good to us.

We’re definitely going to pop by when they are open (they’re looking at opening around December 1, 2012).

A good cuppa, Japanese, Egyptian, and Lebanese style

We asked this morning, “where you can who makes a good cup of hot tea around here?” and we got some answers:

“LINN inĀ AstoriaĀ has a great, earthy, hot matcha green tea that I like to end my meals there with.” – @tastoriaqueens

“I like the Egyptian Coffee Shop” –Ā @theglobalgrocer

“JERUSALEM TEA (w/ rosewater and cardamom) at PITA HOT” – @nyc8675309
