Back in August we wrote about a new pizzeria that is coming to Ditmars Blvd in Astoria. We have some new information to update you with, and we have to say – it looks very promising.

The name of this new restaurant is Tufino Pizzeria Napoletena, and they will be offering “Specialty wood-fired Neopolitan Pizza.” As we mentioned before, they are using a Stefano Ferrara wood oven, which is one of the best when it comes to wood-fired pizza ovens.

The welcome message on the website:

Tufino Pizzeria Napoletana is family owned and operated to ensure that the highest standards of Neopolitan authenticity are met. Starting with our custom hand built Stefano Ferrara oven which was constructed in Naples, Italy using volcanic lava ash from Mt. Vesuvius. Our dough is made in house daily and is naturally leavened, a method which is over 200 years old that was used by the first Pizzaiolos of Naples.

Today, there are only a handful of pizzerias that still use this ancient method. Our tomatoes and cheeses along with our extra virgin olive oil are true to the standards set in Italy and the passion and love put into every pizza are what makes them so special!

The proof is in the pizza!

They have 18 different kinds of pizzas on their menu, including the classic Margherita (organic Italian tomatoes, Fior Di latte, Parmigiano, basil and extra virgin olive oil) to the more elaborate Patatine (sliced Yukon Gold potatoes, provolone, leeks, smoked pancetta, Parmagiano, extra virgin olive oil). There’s even an Il Greco (Fior di latte, fontina, Kalamata olives, oregano, lemon juice, extra virgin olive oil) – perhaps a nod to the Greek influence in the neighborhood?

There are additional toppings you can put on your pizza, as well, such as roasted onions and Italian anchovies. Pizzas run between $9 and $16, and will likely be served as whole pizzas and no slices. Salads and panini are also available.

They’ll also be serving dolcetti fritti – “fried treats” – including arancini (fried rice balls stuffed with mozzarella and sausage ragu) and melanzane fritte (fried eggplant, golden raisins, ricotta, pepperoncino, and herb sauce over a creamy polenta). Salumi (cured meats) and cheese plates will be available, as will a plate of mozzarella di buffala and prosciutto.

Astoria is home to two relatively new restaurants with wood-fired pizza ovens, Basil Brick Oven Pizza and Via Trenta, both of which have been well-received by the local pizza lovers in Astoria. Sac’s Place, a coal-oven pizzeria and restaurant, also has a strong following. And a number of places that make classic NY street slices also do very well in the neighborhood. Astoria really does love its pizza.

They will be open soon. More details as we have them.
