Over on Astorians, we read that the old Barril Grill space on the corner of Broadway and 31st Street in Astoria (GMAP) is going to become a La Gata Golosa, a Colombian bakery/diner that has locations in Jackson Heights (GMAP) and Elmhurst (GMAP). Compared to these areas, Astoria is somewhat lacking in the Colombian food area; there’s La Casa del Pan, Sandros’s Latin Food, Tierras Colombianas, and Earth, Wind, and Fire Cafe, but that’s pretty much it (if you know of others, please let us know!).

If this location is like the others, they’ll serve baked goods like pandebono (they make one of the best in Queens, according to Serious Eats) and buñuelos, empanadas, cholados (a fruit and shave ice drink), salpicon (a kind of fruit salad in juice), sandwiches, chicharron and meaty steam table treats. Maybe they’ll even the monstrous bandeja paisa – meat, beans, rice, eggs, plantain, chicharron, avocado, and arepa. This is a serious platter of food.

  • There’s also my personal fav, La Fonda Antioqueña on Steinway near broadway. (I’m half Colombian if it matters). Oh, and Astoria Park Pizza does a reasonable job with the Bandeja for cheap.
