Over on PolicyMic, art and architecture photographer Amanda Kirpatrick visited the Rockaways after Hurricane Sandy and wanted to understand the storm and its aftermath. She wanted to find a way to understand what had happened amidst the overwhelming massive amount of information that was coming at her via media and other sources. She decided to look at structure. Here’s what she says about that:

I really wanted to see, structurally, “what happened?” Looking at structure is perhaps less of a human story but it’s also a way of looking at how overwhelming that particular storm was. If you look closely at what happened to the buildings, you can understand how it powerful that event was. When something can knock down an entire house, you don’t doubt the strength of the storm, the ocean, the wind. Showing that power respects the tragedy.

She’s no stranger to hurricane damage, having seen it in the Northeast before. Her mother is a contractor, so she grew up spending time at construction sites. With that background mixed with her love of architecture, buildings, and photography, it made sense for her to try to understand the destruction from an architectural viewpoint, and to document it as a photographer. Her photos are really worth a look.
