Remember when we wrote about the fledgling Jackson Heights Community Orchestra? Well, they had their auditions in September, and a 12-person orchestra resulted (with hope for more musicians to join the fold in the new year). They’ve had a few rehearsals, and now they have a concert scheduled for Wednesday, December 12 at the Jackson Heights Community Church at 7pm, reports DNAinfo.

Local Jackson Heights resident Patricia Glunt is leading the orchestra and is pretty excited about the presence of an orchestra in Jackson Heights, a neighborhood that is chock full of musicians. She says, “Jackson Heights is ripe — and it’s ready for an orchestra. The idea is really to explore and showcase the talent that we have in Queens, and use Jackson Heights as the center of that.” There are musicians in the orchestra from Jackson Heights, but also from Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Manhattan. The musicians are pretty excited about playing in the orchestra.

The concert on the 12th is likely going to be a holiday concert, judging from the photos in the DNAinfo article – the first violin part to the Sinfony of Handel’s Messiah was pictured in the slideshow (and is shown above).
