A mix of mild (left) and spicy (right) lamb broth at Little Lamb Hot Pot in Flushing, Queens

Fooditka, AKA Judith Rich, wrote up her experience eating at Little Lamb Hot Pot (Tian San Yun Juan Shao Fei Yun in Chinese), an excellent hot pot restaurant on Flushing’s Main Street (GMAP). Disclaimer – we also were there!

The set up for hot pot is that you are given broth (the restaurant is known for its lamb broth) and you dunk or cook various things in it – meat, offal, seafood, vegetables, mushrooms (Judith and her dining companions tried lamb heart and pig’s blood, too). You can choose a mild or spicy broth (it is quite hot), too.

The thinly sliced meats cook almost in an instant, whereas it helps to leave the frozen scallops in for a while so that they cook completely. The mushrooms were also a real winner.

Along with that you put together a dipping sauce to your tastes. There are options like soy sauce, vinegar, and peanut sauce. A good combination is soy sauce, black vinegar, chili oil, scallions, and cilantro. You dip the cooked items in the sauce to further enhance the food.

One of the other appealing things about hot pot is that it is a communal experience, and there is a lot of sharing going on, which is really fun.

The meal only cost $22 with tax and tip, too. The meal was quite delicious.
