Both Gothamist and DNAinfo have been chattering about the coming bus route between LIC and Williamsburg. This is what would happen:

The proposed route runs from the Williamsburg Bridge along Kent Avenue to Franklin Street in Greenpoint, and then on Green Street to McGuiness Boulevard before crossing the Pulaski Bridge and running up 11th Street in Long Island City.

And to return from Queens, the bus would travel on 21st Street to Jackson Avenue and then cross the Pulaski Bridge back on McGuiness Boulevard, Freeman Street, Franklin Street and then Wythe Avenue.

Here’s the route on the north (LIC) side (click to enlarge):

The MTA announced this back in July, along with an extension of the G… in Brooklyn. We would love to see them extend the G back to Queens Plaza (a major transfer point), or better yet, extend it back to Forest Hills as it used to be years ago before they cut service. Both Brooklyn and Queens are growing and changing, and becoming destinations. Here’s hoping.

But back to this new bus line – the MTA plans meet with local community boards (CB 2 in Queens) this winter to discuss the new bus route. This could be an excellent option for traveling down this side of Queens/Brooklyn. Right now the options are the B62 bus, which leaves from Queens Plaza, and the East River Ferry.

  1. This is, of course, good news, but it seems that expanding service on the B62 would serve essentially the same function—this proposed line runs very close to that one for what appears to be its entire route and also pretty closely follows the G. Instead of a brand new bus line, I’d rather see the restoration of weekend service on the B24, which was cut a while back. The B24 connects Sunnyside, Williamsburg, and Greenpoint.

I’d also throw all my votes toward expanding the G back through Queens to Forest Hills though. Or at least to Jackson Heights. I wonder if that will ever, ever happen.
