Astoria City Councilman Peter Vallone continues to make news (perhaps in part because he is planning to run for Queens Borough President) regarding the new Major League Soccer (MLS) stadium and team coming to the borough. We told you about his desire to see the MLS team play at Citi Field instead of at a new stadium in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, but he also wants the new team to have “Queens” in its moniker, reports Big Apple Soccer.

Vallone says, “Whatever happens, if we bring a soccer team to Queens, whether it be at Citi Field or a new stadium, that soccer team must be called ‘the Queens’ whatever. Like, there’s the Brooklyn Nets. I want a ‘Queens’ team.”

We can understand where he is coming from, for sure, and we would welcome MLS deciding to include “Queens” in the name. But we will just have to see. We are dubious that the stadium will be put on hold, though, as MLS is pretty dead set on building a new stadium here.
