Around the world in one concert! On January 26, Flushing Town Hall will present Afro-Amerindian Journey, featuring live Latin music, an open dance floor and delicious food. The event is an homage to the blending of indigenous and African musical traditions in Mexico, Colombia and Peru. Radio Jarocha will play traditional tunes from southern Veracruz, where Spain mixed with the Mayan World. La Cumbiamba EneY will perform Cumbia, an African courtship dance that arrived in Colombia’s Caribbean coast during slavery and then spread throughout South America. This genre transforms yet again with Moneco, which will jam to Peruvian Cumbia rhythms called “Chicha.” And the other chicha, a drink derived from maize, will be on sale along with empanadas from Terraza 7 Cafe in Jackson Heights.
