Bomba is a percussion-driven musical style formed in 17th century Puerto Rico. African slaves used “bomba” lyrics to express political and spiritual emotions while “bomba” rhythms moved them to dance and celebrate. Plena, which often includes satirical comments, derived from bomba in southern Puerto Rico in the early 20th century. On January 13, world’s preeminent bomba y plena band, Los Pleneros de la 21, will perform at Flushing Town Hall. Led by 1996 NEA National Heritage Fellow Juan Gutierrez-Rodriguez, this unique troupe has been spearheading a recent bomba y plena resurgence in New York City. The event will begin with an interactive workshop on Afro-Caribbean idioms, drumming, singing and dancing.
