On December 18, the zoning for the Hunters Point South building that will be at 1-50 50th Avenue has been approved, according to the Department of Buildings. The plan exam is still listed as “disapproved.” The original plan submitted in mid-April was disapproved, then resubmitted in early October – that, too was disapproved.

The Halletts Point development has been back in the news recently. First, what is Halletts Point? It’s a new development planned for the waterfront along the land mass called Hallett’s Point, a peninsula that juts out into the East River (GMAP) just south of Astoria Park. It is home to the Astoria Houses, Build it Green! and a few other businesses (including the mysterious Hellgate Filming Studios), and Whitey Ford Field.

The new animated film, Rise of the Guardians, is in theaters starting today, and we can tell you that it is fabulous (we are told that this is the most advanced animated film in history). We attended a press preview the other day, and were really impressed with what the Museum of the Moving Image has done to present the art involved with this movie. Their exhibit is called The Art of Rise of the Guardians, and it is full of art and artifacts from the filmmaking process.

The LIC Post reports that The Who – yes, the famous British rock band – has given LIC bar (GMAP) new sound system equipment, and we can’t deny that this is very, very cool. During Hurricane Sandy, LIC Bar’s basement – where they stored the original sound system equipment – flooded with seven feet of water, ruining everything.
