DNAinfo reports that a community group, the Forest-Rego Compost Collective, a local non-profit, wants to turn the area behind the Home Depot on Woodhaven Boulevard (GMAP) into a community garden. Right now the space is unused and full of trash and gnarly poison ivy. Jeremy Teperman, a member of the Collective, says, “We’ve been looking for places to do community gardens around the neighborhood and there aren’t that many open lots in Forest Hills and Rego Park.”

The potential garden spot is on property owned by the MTA and is very near LIRR tracks that aren’t used that often – from what we can tell it looks like the path the LIRR takes from Hunters Point to Jamaica (that train is not very active). It’s also “densely wooded” and so the garden would not be used for growing edible produce like in many other community gardens throughout the borough. The community just wants to beautify it – clean it out and plant some new plants. The MTA is reviewing the proposal currently.
