We first spotted this on Gothamist, then DNAinfo – the Trust for Public Land is ready to find a company to do a feasibility study on the elevated QueensWay park, and has issued an RFP (request for proposals) to do just that. They’ve got $467K to spend on the study, thanks to Governor Cuomo, which is not chump change. TPL will choose a winner in the next few months, according to Marc Matsil, TPL’s NY State Director.

They expect the study to take less than a year to complete. Here are more details as to what will be involved with the feasibility study, according to Matsil:

The analysis will include engineering and environmental components. It will check the structural integrity of the tracks, test soil, estimate the cost of construction and identify the funding sources. It will also come up with a design that will incorporate various ideas and concepts.

The QueensWay would provide more green space, as well as a great throughway for pedestrians and cyclists. Not everyone is into it, though – in particular, folks from Woodhaven whose backyards are up against the rail line, and those (Rockaway Transit Coalition) who would like to see the line turned back into an actual working train route. As a reminder, here is a flyover of the route, which goes from Rego Park to Ozone Park:

  1. I do not live in Woodhaven any more but I did from 1951 to 1992. But I came across your website. I too was involved with many so called good for the public projects which myself was in opposition to on L.I.

Get your neighbors together and hire an attorney. This will show you mean business and are serious. Have the attorney send a registered letter stating your groups opposition to this projects. 1) Safety concerns, 2) Quality of life issues, 3) Property values, etc. State in the letter if they proceed with this project the neighbors of your group will file an article 78 proceeding to show cause to stop it. Also you might be able to tie up this project for years and years in court. I am pretty sure that some of the neighbor;s yards have encroachments into the proposed property. You might be able to claim adverse prosession if you have been using that property for over 10 years. You might now be able to own it. That is why it is important that your group hire an attorney. Good luck..
