  1. The Mathews Flats dating back to the 20’s and 30’s are very representative of Queens.
    These buildings are ‘new law tenements’ – not tenements themselves but post-tenement housing which was built to address the serious short-comings of housing all over NYC which was over-crowded, lacking light/air and led to the spread of tuberculosis throughout the city.

    These buildings are landmarked in Ridgewood Queens and can also be found in Woodside, Sunnyside and Astoria.
