There are native New Yorkers and then there are those who think Domino’s or Papa John’s are OK choices for Pizza. The former subscribe to a qualitative list for rating this staple of the NYC diet, waxing rhapsodic about crust, sauce, and cheese. Recommendations are passed from person to person in hushed whispers, and enthusiasts will travel to far flung locales in search of a perfect slice. Luckily, you don’t have to venture far from the N line in Astoria to find it. Sac’s Place, found on Broadway and 29th street in Astoria (25-41 Broadway, to be specific) offers a slice that borders on the sublime. Now for some history and photos of pies…

On August 19th, 1989, Anthony Sacramone and his brother Domenico opened their pizzeria and Italian casual dining restaurant in Astoria. Using a coal burning oven and a list of recipes carried from the town of Abruzzo in Orsogna Italy by their mother Maddalena, the Sacramones created a restaurant and bar which serves one of the best slices in western queens and is a contender for the citywide crown. Queens is known for its eats, a reputation mostly deserved, and Sac’s is the place for pizza.

Not focused only on pizza, Sacs Place makes its own pasta in house and offers a long list of Italian specialties. They’ve recently opened a second location in East Meadow, Long Island, which is a bit more of a “sit down” restaurant. There are distinctions for the various specie of Pizza one finds in NYC, a “Manhattan” or “Brooklyn” slice for instance. The Queens variant sports a thinner and crunchier crust, with sauce both above and below the cheese. GMAP
