Locals hope the new science campus from Cornell University and Technion-Israel Institute of Technology on Roosevelt Island will help ignite the tech industry in Western Queens, according to the Times Ledger. An official from the Coalition for Queens, which had pushed for a campus at Willets Point, believes that Cornell’s presence will boost the local start-up community. Community Board 1 is “looking forward” to the new school presence as well, but has some concerns about traffic problems stemming from construction. The Cornell campus will open in 2017 and will create $23 bllion in economic activity, according to the city.

  • I think with the continuted development in Queens Plaza, it will certainly make for a good link between the new tech center on RI and everything coming down the pipe on this side of the East River. Since the F train is the only viable transportation option between the two, I think a lot of the success would stem from the development around the 21st St/Queensbridge stop. The general surrounding area is mostly NYCHA and commerical, so it remains to be seen how the area will develop around this key link.
