CSA Boxes2

Summer officially arrived in Hunter’s Point last night, and it did so in boxes of fresh, leafy vegetables. Tuesday night marked the first drop-off of the first season for members of the Hunter’s Point CSA. Fresh goodies included vegetables from Golden Earthworm farm on Long Island. Members of this new CSA were greeted with their vegetables in boxes stacked just inside the entrance to Alewife at 5-14 51st Avenue.

Founder Susan Fedynak took the Hunter’s Point CSA from idea to fruition in five short months and was able to organize a farm and members together in time for the summer growing season. Community-supported agriculture partners a farm with consumers who pay an annual fee in advance of the season. Each Tuesday, a share of in-season produce will be delivered to each member. The first delivery saw members enter, pick up their vegetables – along with, in many cases, a beer, and depart with a bag full of leafy greens.Kale, lettuces, arugula, and turnips filled the first share. As you can see from the photo above, not all members could wait until they made it home to taste the first delivery.
