five-27-NEW
We like the exterior and the look of the finishes in this new condo building, Five27, in Long Island City. This studio has a washer/dryer in the unit, and common charges are $316 a month. However, for $440,000 for 490 square feet and only one closet, we might prefer a bigger apartment in an older building. What’s your take?

  1. Roland, I live in Forest Hills and I take the E or F train to Manhattan every day. On an average day, it takes about 20-25 minutes to get to either Lex/53rd or Lex/63rd. So Forest Hills is very convenient if you work in midtown.
I think there is a perception among many people who don’t live in Queens that Forest Hills is very far from Manhattan on the subway. The reality is that Forest Hills is a very convenient commute to and from midtown. Of course, FH is not as close to midtown as LIC, but FH is not nearly as far from midtown as many people think it is.

  2. Anon, it’s obvious that you are trying to pick a fight with me. You can change your screen name to anything you want, I’m not interested in fighting with you.

    • Let’s keep it pleasant, everyone! It’s fine to have pride in your neighborhood. If you think there are better alternatives, please talk about those instead of disparaging others!

FHGuy – Curious how long your commute is, and if you think the distance between Forest Hills and Manhattan, where a lot of people work, is an obstacle for people who are looking to rent/buy there?

    • I have a porblem with every comment you make touting how great Forest Hills is in comparison to other places. Perhaps you should go back and re-read them and you will know what i’m talking about.

  3. Kat, that’s a fairly broad generalization that you made about the type of people who want to move to LIC or Forest Hills. I think you are making a big assumption that there is only one type of person who would want to move to LIC and that there is only one type of person who would want to move to Forest Hills. I don’t think that is true. I think there are many different types of people who are interested in moving to each of these neighborhoods.

Also, the types of people who are moving to different neighborhoods changes over time. In Forest Hills, there are a lot more younger people now than there have been in past years. A lot more younger people have moved to Forest Hills from Manhattan and Brooklyn in the last few years. Ten years ago, very few people from Manhattan or Brooklyn would have considered moving to Forest Hills. Things have changed as more and more people discover that Forest Hills is one of the last affordable neighborhoods in the city that is convenient to midtown Manhattan.

  4. Yes, most other areas of Queens are cheaper than LIC. But, in my opinion, none of the other Queens neighborhoods you mentioned can offer what Forest Hills does. Forest Hills is one of the most upscale neighborhoods in Queens, but is still relatively affordable and is very convenient to midtown Manhattan on the subway. I think the only other neighborhood you mentioned that is comparable to Forest Hills is Bayside. But Bayside is not nearly as convenient to midtown because there is no subway in Bayside and there is only the LIRR to get into Manhattan, which is more expensive than the subway and many people still have to take the subway once they get to Penn Station. Forest Hills has a subway hub at 71st/Continental Avenue, with 4 subway lines (the E, F, M and R).

    • Forest Hills is nice, but the kind of person that wants to move to LIC is not the same kind of person that wants to move to Forest Hills. They’re both two different neighborhoods that offer two different kinds of people the kind of things that they need, want and hopefully can afford. Theres’s a neighborhood for everybody.
