Developers and local residents clashed on Wednesday during a City Planning hearing on the Willets Point development plan. The Associated Press reported that a representative of Sterling Equities, one of the developers along with the Related Companies, said the project would bring needed retail options to the area. But local landlord Irene Prestigiacomo called it a “land grab” and others said a new mall would overwhelm transit options and was unfairly receiving city subsidies. The hearing came after two local City Council members criticized the plan, and Borough President Helen Marshall endorsed it. The City Planning Commission will vote on the project later this summer, followed by the City Council.
