18-33 41ST STREET

The Benjamin T. Pike house, better known as the Steinway Mansion, is still for sale, for the much-reduced price of $1,900,000. Located at 18-33 41st Street in Astoria, the granite- and bluestone-faced Italianate mansion was built in 1858 and originally sat on 440 acres of land. The listing says the house comes with one acre; a group called Friends of the Steinway Mansion does not want the land to be subdivided further. Features include five marble fireplaces, pocket doors whose glass depicts Pike’s 19th century scientific instruments, a rotunda with a stained glass skylight, underground cisterns for collecting rain water, and a 1,000 gallon copper tank in the attic to supply the house with pressurized water, according to Wikipedia. The house, which is landmarked, has been in the Halberian family since 1924, and was listed for sale for $4,900,000 with Douglas Elliman in 2009, according to Streeteasy. Interior shots and a floor plan can still be seen here. Do you think it will sell?
