Astoria’s staple Greek eatery, Uncle George’s Greek Tavern, closed its doors last month. Its telephone number was officially disconnected last week, and a new landlord has taken over the building. The restaurant, located at 33-19 Broadway since 1978, apparently owed around $55,000 in back rent. Assemblywoman Aravella Simotas (D-Astoria) told The Daily News, “It’s the end of an era. It represented a wonderful picture of the past. It was a classic Greek taverna.” The 24-hour restaurant served traditional Greek food like spinach pie and grape leaves. It is unknown what will happen to the building yet.
