Mayor Bloomberg will cut the ribbon at the new Hunters Point South Park tomorrow. The park opened up to the public last week. The Wall Street Journal has some more details on the five acre park space, designed by Weiss/Manfredi in collaboration with Thomas Balsley Associates. It features a stainless-steel, solar-powered pavilion (which will eventually hold a cafe), lawns, pathways, a dog run and an urban beach. There are native plantings as well as a “bio-swale” path that runs through the park to help irrigate it. A waterfront deck made from Southern yellow pine is large enough to host performances.

This park is part of the Hunters Point South development that will eventually bring 5,000 new apartment units to the area. Developers have already started construction on two residential towers, one that will rise 37 floors and the other 32 floors. The only completed part of the project so far is the park and a school set to open this year.
