DRIVERS_WANTED_TAXI_TIME_SQUARE_WIDE

It is said that only a taxi driver truly understands New York City’s more than 6,000 miles of paved roads. For insight into the lives of those who spend their careers on these often crowded thoroughfares, filmmaker Joshua Z Weinstein (no period with middle initial) went to 55 Stan, a dirty, noisy and lovable taxi garage in Long Island City. There, he found a melting pot of characters, everybody from Spider, a cigar-smoking African-American who’s been on the job since 1945, to Eric, a Chinese immigrant father of two who is broke. The result: Drivers Wanted, a documentary which captures the highs and lows of a dangerous, stressful, lonely and very male profession. This Saturday, Weinstein will host a one-time-only, free screening of Drivers Wanted in 55 Stan’s parking lot to celebrate the movie’s forthcoming digital distribution. Presented by Filmwax and the Queens World Film Festival, special guests will include Spider, who is believed to be the city’s oldest cab driver, and other taxi celebrities.

Details: Drivers Wanted, 55 Stan Operating Corporation’s parking lot, 45-16 Vernon Boulevard, LIC, September 7th, 8 pm, free (Rain date: September 8th).
