Community Board One Gets Behind Street Improvements for 21st Street

Last night, Transportation Alternatives presented to Community Board One’s Transportation Committee on street improvement proposals for 21st Street. TA’s Queens Activist Committee prioritized pedestrian safety improvements and shared bicycle space for the thoroughfare, which runs through Astoria and Long Island City. Miller Nuttle of Transportation Alternatives reports that representatives from the Variety Boys and Girls Club, Mount Carmel Church, Ravenswood Senior Center and Queensview Co-Op all came to the meeting and spoke up in favor of traffic calming. Suggestions included left-turn bays, more traffic lights, curb extensions and bus lanes. CB1’s Transportation Committee was supportive — they asked TA to compile a list of specific changes for the street to present to the board leadership. The board will then reach out to the DOT and request those changes. As Nuttle says, “Ideally, that request will come in the form of a resolution.” Sounds like the start to some promising changes coming for 21st Street…
