mount-sinai-queens-expansion-100213 Astoria’s Mount Sinai Queens Hospital will break ground on its $125,000,000 expansion on October 21st, reports the New York Daily News. The expansion includes a new five-story building that will increase the size of the emergency department from 4,000 to 20,000 square feet. With the new space the hospital will be able to focus on better outpatient care and hire more doctors and specialists. But, before this new build will go up, an old one must go down. Yesterday, the hospital began demolishing a Tudor-style home built in 1895 as part of the original Astoria Hospital. Mount Sinai used the building for office space until last month. Construction workers removed the building’s sandstone cornerstone, revealing an old Bible hidden behind it. The hospital will display the cornerstone in the new building.
