Far Roc-rendering

This afternoon the city announced that the Swedish firm White Arkitekter won the FAR ROC Design Competition, which asked architecture firms to design sustainable, storm-resilient development for the Arverne East site in the Rockaways. The Wall Street Journal reported the news, saying that “The firm’s proposal features a kinked boardwalk to help break up the force of a storm surge, water basins, a small canal to help collect water and a pier extending far into the ocean featuring event spaces and possible an oyster farm.” The firm found design inspiration from both Sweden and the Netherlands, also storm-prone areas. You can view the full proposal, “Small Means and Great Ends,” here [PDF]. White Arkitekter will receive a $30,000 prize. It is possible the ideas of all four finalists could be integrated into the final development of the site, which is more than 80 acres.
