Community Board Pulls QueensWay Funding Priority, Community Workshops Coming Up

Queens Courier reports that Community Board Nine removed the QueensWay — a proposal to convert the former Rockaway Beach LIRR line into a public greenway — from its capital budget. The project already received $467,000 from Governor Andrew Cuomo and $600,000 from private donations to conduct a feasibility study. As a CB9 member told Queens Courier, “If the feasibility of a project can’t be figured out when it already has nearly a half million dollars to figure it out, then there’s a problem.” As of yet, CB9 hasn’t replaced the QueensWay with any other item on its budget priorities.

While we’re talking about the QueensWay, a series of community workshops regarding the greenway proposal are coming up. Tonight, a meeting is taking place in Forest Hills — details here. Tomorrow, another workshop will happen in Ozone Park — details on that one here. Both meetings will be an opportunity for community members, business owners and interested individuals to share input and ideas on the design and programming of the QueensWay. If you can’t make it to one of these events, there will be more opportunities for discussion in January and February.

  • This merely removed from the Community Board’s list of funding priorities a long standing line item for funding a feasibility study. Since the State of New York has funded the feasibility study, and that study is now underway, the funding request was effectively satisfied and is now moot. This was not a vote on whether to support the creation of the proposed park.

  • There was no reason to leave it in since the money was raised. The snarkiness of some people just to be snarky is a sad comment on their ability to see that there is no big story hear. It would have made the community board look silly to continue to request money for a feasibility study that is in the process of being conducted. Come on people, isn’t there real news out there!
