The auto body shops of Willets Point are eyeing spaces in the Bronx and in Maspeth after the city forced them to relocate to make way for a mega mall development. DNAinfo reports that a collection of 52 auto body businesses is in negotiation for a 150,000-square-foot warehouse in Hunts Point. There are no details on the potential space the collective looked at in Maspeth.

The auto body owners want to relocate as a group, considering that the Iron Triangle hinges on so many different businesses in a single place. The city is assisting businesses to relocate; this past Saturday was the deadline for shops to move and receive a payout of one year’s rent. From now until late January, owners will receive a payout of six month’s rent.

  1. Hunts Point is already similar to Willets point, it’s packed with ton’s of auto repair/scrap/auto salvage places. Why would they go to an already saturated area, the bronx has tons of pockets like this with whole blocks full of shady auto repair places and they all look like filthy post apocalyptic nightmares. Their argument of allowing a customer to shop around is BS because they all have unspoken rules and charge about the same. They want hunts point because they want to do whatever they want, ie: pollute, dump and allow the area to go into disrepair. The Bronx has the highest asthma rate and has enough pollution why add to the problem.

    • Hopefully they all go out of business permanently. Full of illegal and shady dealings, from chop-shop activity to money laundering. There are way more legitimate autobody shops in this city than we need anyway.
