Queens-Hospital-Center's-T-Building-demo

The Queens Preservation Council is out to save the T Building at the Queens Hospital Center in Jamaica Hills. The Times Ledger reports that the Queens Hospital Center tried to lease out the building and ultimately dropped the plans after facing resistance from residents. Now the hospital is exploring what’s next for the space, and that may be demolition. The 10-story, Art Moderne building has lots of structural problems and would cost the hospital a lot of money to repair. The architect John Russell Pope designed the 76-year-old structure, which opened as a tuberculosis ward, in 1937. It’s now used for office space.

According to the Ledger, “When the state razed four other buildings that were considered eligible for the National Register of Historic Places in 1998, it included a binding covenant to preserve the T Building.” And so the Queens Preservation Council plans to rally for the T Building and launch a campaign to protect it.
