Arepa Lady Will Open Brick and Mortar Restaurant in Jackson Heights

Fantastic news for anyone who’s visited the Arepa Lady (aka Maria Cano) on the corner of Roosevelt Avenue and 79th Street: she is opening a brick and mortar restaurant at 77-02AA Roosevelt Avenue, between 77th and 78th Streets. Serious Eats reports that the 300-square-foot restaurant will fit a few seats and offer take out. You can also expect an expanded menu, with new meat and vegetable toppings for the arepas. As you can see in the photo above, the space is now under construction. The plan is to open it this spring.

Maria Cano started serving her arepas out of a food cart in the 90s and soon rose to street vendor fame. She serves Friday and Saturday nights during warm months of the year. The family still plans to operate the food cart once the shop is open. Can’t wait!
