Over the weekend the activist group Right of Way held a DIY Slow Zone event in which New Yorkers placed 20 MPH speed limit signs in 10 different neighborhoods around the city. The above photo comes from Astoria residents who participated in the event. According to the Epoch Times, “Many of the neighborhoods where the signs went up have already been designated as slow zones by the city, but the Department of Transportation goes through a lengthy process to finally install the signs.” Slow zones — which typically reduce traffic from 30 to 20 miles per hour — are installed by the Department of Transportation in response to community applications. In many cases, the actual implementation is delayed due to lack of resources.

There are currently 29 designated slow zones in the city, including neighborhoods like Jackson Heights, Sunnyside, and Sunnyside Gardens. In Mayor de Blasio’s Vision Zero plan, he proposed to create another 25 slow zones in the city. UPDATE: Residents of Jackson Heights participated in the Slow Zone event as well.
