sunnyside-playground-renovations

The Parks Department will soon undertake a $2,000,000 reconstruction of the Thomas P. Noonan Jr. Playground, located along Greenpoint Avenue off 43rd Street in Sunnyside. The project, funded by Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer, will add more play equipment, as well as separate play areas for toddlers and older children. Parks will install more swings, a new spray shower and additional planted areas. They’ll also add bike racks, benches, paving and new fencing. The park’s site drainage and lighting will be improved, and the main entrance will be partially reconstructed. Finally, new granite slabs will also be added to the base of the park flagpole as a monument to Brooklyn-born war hero, Lance Corporal Thomas P. Noonan — that, of course, is who the playground is named after. Noonan served in Vietnam, where he was killed in action while attempting to rescue wounded members of his company.

The Parks Department originally planned a groundbreaking ceremony for today, but it’s been postponed. Stay tuned for the new date. GMAP
