The Jackson Heights commercial building on 37th Avenue, badly damaged by a five-alarm fire this week, does not need to be demolished. DNAinfo reports that the Department of Buildings issued a full vacate order for the structure, which houses more than 50 businesses. But because it’s now stable, the DOB did not order it to be torn down. According to DNAinfo, “The building’s owner will have an engineer on scene to monitor the rear wall of the building, which has significant damage.” The owner also boarded up the windows and put up a sidewalk shed.

Some of the businesses previously located here are searching for a new temporary location. It’s unknown when the building will be habitable again.
