Q103-queens-bus

At an MTA meeting this Monday, local pols as well as cultural institutions in Astoria and Long Island City pushed for a proposed plan to increase service on the Q103 bus line. The Q103 is the main bus route along the western edge of Queens, traveling along Vernon Boulevard and stopping near Socrates Sculpture Park, the Noguchi Museum and the Brick House Ceramic Art Center. This June, the MTA will begin a trial period for the Q103 with expanded weekday service and, for the first time, weekend service. Local pols want these changes made permanent. But the trial period still requires final approvals from the MTA Board — that will hopefully happen at the meeting next Monday, April 28th.

The increased service has the support of Borough President Melinda Katz, Senator Michael Gianaris, Council Member Jimmy Van Bramer, Assemblywoman Aravella Simotas, Assemblywoman Catherine Nolan and Council Member Costa Constantinides. (Local pols have actually fought for increased service for years.) As Senator Gianaris stated, “At long last, weekend service on the Q103 bus line is in sight. I urge the MTA to approve this service increase and recognize that our community’s need for better mass transit is pressing. The need for more public transportation in our area will only continue to grow, especially on weekends, as more people flock to our waterfront to visit our restaurants, parks, and cultural institutions. Astoria and Long Island City have become hubs for the arts, and New Yorkers should finally be able to travel between them on the Vernon Boulevard bus lines on Saturdays and Sundays.”
