Austin’s Ale House Celebrates its Official Patio Opening in Kew Gardens

This week, Austin’s Ale House celebrated its expanded patio and green space now open in Kew Gardens. Austin’s built its outdoor patio way back in 2003, expanded it last year, and just received approvals to landscape and upkeep the surrounding green space. Borough President Melinda Katz even awarded the owners a Citation of Honor, “recognizing that Austin’s Ale House… has an outstanding business, worthy of the esteem of the community, the Borough and the City of New York.” The full patio/green expansion marks a number of years that the owners worked with the community board, the Long Island Railroad and the MTA, since the expansion utilizes some LIRR land.

You can see photos of the event here. After the jump, you’ll find before and after shots of Austin’s new greenery. The spot, open since 1991, serves pub-style food, beers and spirits. GMAP

  • Kitty Genovese lived above Austin’s Ale House, whatever it was called back then, & was stabbed to death on her way home in 1964, just steps from her door.

  • Inside the dining room, you can see some fantastic work by local artist Emily Mintz
