Martha Graham Dance Company has dazzled for decades. The troupe was founded by the eponymous choreographer and performer whose global impact was so great that she was the first dancer ever to win a Presidential Medal of Freedom.

This month, the ensemble will present for the first time ever at Queens Theatre as part of a jam-packed recently announced season that features various presentations by dance troupes, as well as comedy, Shakespeare by local company Titan Theater, children’s specials and magic. This year, Martha Graham Dance Company is embracing a new style that fuses its masterpieces with works by contemporary artists. At Queens Theatre, it will perform its signature piece, Appalachian Spring, which Graham premiered on October 30, 1944 at the Library on Congress in Washington D.C. (with a set designed by famed Long Island City-based sculptor Isamu Noguchi). To music by Aaron Copland, characters such as a bride, a groom, and a preacher visually represent 19th century pioneers exalting the construction of a farmhouse in Pennsylvania.

Dance Entropy, Ballet Hispánico, and Jessica Lange Dance are the other scheduled dance performers at Queens Theatre this season.
