About two months ago, The Secret Theatre had to  launch an Indiegogo campaign to defray unforeseen NYC Department of Buildings fines and pay for required building upgrades. Well, the Long Island City-based arts organization exceeded its $10,000 fundraising goal, and it’s currently presenting more of its characteristically unique programming, including a camp, a short play competition, and a dance festival. More info on the jump page.

This Monday, the Secret Theatre Academy’s junior drama teacher Mary Lauren and founder Richard Mazda will offer a one-day, eight-hour camp for children ages five and over. The fun will begin with improv games and continue with a puppet-making activity for a play based on Christopher Columbus. Youngsters will also learn musical theatre, watch a movie, and eat pizza. And if things go well, a Veterans Day camp is on the horizon.

Meanwhile, the venue is about halfway through its short play festival, Act One: One ActAfter reviewing submissions from playwrights across the country, the organizers are presenting 20 short plays on various dates through October 17th. Some of the works will advance to a final round through secret audience votes. Final voting will be done by a panel of judges, and the winners will be announced during the closing night party.

And in late October, the theatre will host the inaugural Queensboro Dance Festival. Over seven evenings, a total of 24 borough-based choreographers will demonstrate their fancy footwork.
