Three Great Live Music Options This Weekend

    by

Wonderful sounds of Asia, Europe, and Latin America will fill the Queens air this weekend during three different concerts. The fun starts on Saturday afternoon, when the EastRiver Ensemble presents a workshop on Chinese music at 1 pm, followed by a concert at 2:15 pm. This group presents traditional folk music, dance, and acrobatics with a focus on the Dongbei and Hebei regions of north China. Instruments include the yangqin (dulcimer), the pipa (lute), flutes, fiddles, and percussion. More photos and information are on the jump page.

On Saturday night, noted piano duo Stephanie Ho and Saar Ahuvia will perform Debussy’s Petite Suite, George Crumb’s Makrokosmos IV, Beethoven’s Quartet in C Major, and other classics in Forest Hills Gardens. Plus, Adrienne Onofri, who just wrote a foot-tour guidebook, Walking Queens, will be on hand to sell and sign her tome.

Then there’s a rare treat on Sunday afternoon, when Quintet of the Americas performs a free concert at Flushing Library. This world-renowned woodwind group plays music from all over South America. For this concert, the band will play with the Corona Youth Orchestra and Harold Gutierrez, a Colombian composer known for his versatility in creating great dance music.
