On February 26th, 1971, then Secretary-General U Thant signed a proclamation decreeing that the United Nations would celebrate Earth Day on the vernal equinox. This Sunday at Queens Museum, the United Nations Association’s Queens chapter will mark the 44th anniversary of this international festival with dancing, poetry, bell ringing, multimedia art, solar power, and as to be expected at a UN-influenced event, speeches. Activities include the following: Briana Dillahunt reads a poem, UNA Queens Director John Tandana rings in spring; Raquel de Anda of People’s Climate Art presents a multimedia piece; a seed-planting by the Queens Botanical Gardens; a performance by the Wianek Polish Dance Company; and the presentation of a solar battery charger by students from Thomas A. Edison Career and Technical Education High School. There will also be informational tables organized by such entities as Queens SustainableA Million Trees, Flushing CSA, and the United Nations Federal Credit Union.

Details: Earth Day, Queens Museum, NYC Building, Flushing Meadows Corona Park, March 22nd, 1 pm, no entrance fee, but donations are suggested.
