Very interesting story about the ENY bookstore.
I think in this day and age it’s incredibly difficult to keep an independent book store up and running. There’s so much competition from major chains and online operations like Amazon that the little guy hardly stands a chance. Plus, people (not just in ENY) read less these days, preferring to spend money on snacks, video games, movies, clothes, etc.
Also, new books are overpriced (often $16 for a paperback and $25-$30 for a hardback), so a poor/working class neighborhood like ENY is going to feel that impact especially hard.
