There have been some rumors that Petco, the large chain pet store, was planning a move into the old ZuZu’s Petals place on 7th Avenue and Union, which was destroyed along with several other storefronts by a fire. Well, consider the rumor confirmed: We spoke to the owner of the building and he said that Petco will indeed be moving into the new commercial space, to be around 5,000 square feet. The storefronts first have to be demolished, and we have a picture of a rendering here.

  1. surprisingly petco is more expensive than most of the local stores, at least when it comes to dog snacks and toys. bad cuz squeaky toys (essentials for my dog) are $3 more at petco than the local mini chain pet boutique

  2. “How can you provision a sophisticated New York City pet at Petco?”

Re-write: How can you provision a sophisticated New Yorker pet at Costco?

    But you do.

  3. This is one instance where I agree with Rob. Most of the independent pet “boutiques” around look like overpriced dumps.

If a chain had to come in here, I don’t think this was a bad choice.

  4. petcos are fine. they are clean, airy, bright, and air conditioned. at least they dont stink and smell and are dark and gloomy and unorganized like cat pee like the independent chains often smell like.

  5. I have to admit that they’ll get my business. I’ve found that the local stores are a LOT more expensive. And, if Petco plays their cards right and gets involved in the community, it will be a huge hit.

  6. qualmy —
They probably won’t have the standard Petco sign. Dunkin’ Donuts in fancy (heavily ordinanced) villages throughout New England are wooden painted signs with the logo in gold leaf.
